Naches Peak hike Mt Rainier 8-3-09 : It was a very hot day (8-3-09) so we went as high as we could to hike. This hike starts at the Chinook Pass on the East side of Mt Rainier Park. It is about 5400'. The wild flowers were the most abundant we have ever seen. It was hard to capture the lush meadows full of flowers.

Burned Out Car Hike : On March 6, 2009 Bonnie, her sister Char and Susie and I did the hike of burned out cars. This hike is low in the Mecca hills. It was a beautiful day and the wildflowers were just starting to bloom. This was the first hike we have done with Char and she did great (of course Bonnie always does great, she isn't called the energizer bunny (or is that bonnie) for nothing).

Chicago Marathon 2008 : These photos are from the Chicago Marathon run on Oct 12, 2008. This is Sam's first marathon and he brought along some fellow Purdue runners. It was a beautiful, but warm and sunny, day. We caught up with Sam at mile 10, mile 25.5 and after the race. Just catching the runners at those 3 places was a lot of walking. Thanks to my brother Jeff for breakfast and helping us find our way in the large city of Chicago.

Lost Horse Mine Hike and rocky road : This hike up into Josuha Tree NP started well enough. We drove West then North then East from our base in Indio to get to the North West Entrance to the park and hiked up to the Lost Horse gold mine. This mine was active until 1935. It has a large stamping mill and much of the machinery still in place. After the hike I thought we would try a "short cut" back to Indio. There is a 4 wheel road that goes straight South and should cut our trip in half. I had asked a ranger how the road was and he said he had not driven the last part but the rest of it was pretty good as long as you had 4 wheel drive, high ground clearance and a full size spare tire. We had all those so we gave it a try. Of the approx 21 miles the first 15 were very good. We were a little suspicious since we were still at 4500' and Indio is 150'. That is a long way to drop in a few miles. We found out that the road turns into a rock strewn goat trail down a mountain. As soon as we started we went over a pretty good size rock waterfall that I knew we could never get back up; so we were committed to going down with no turning around. A couple of times Susie got out of the car because she didn't want to be in it when it tipped over (not a real risk) or I destroyed it on a big sharp rock (a very real risk). A couple of times I got out to scout a path only to decide my only choice was to go straight over the boulders. In any event we got down without hitting anything real hard. At the bottom was a burned out car that did not make it (or more likely was stolen and stripped then burnt). I didn't mention that although we had enough time for a 2 hour return trip; it began to get dark on the "short cut" . You can see we finally got back to civilization just as the sun set. We have stuck to asphalt since then.

Winter 2008 - Ladder Hike : This was our second time this year doing this hike. Believe it or not, we didn't take the camera along on the first trip. It is a five mile hike through a slot canyon, across a saddle and down another canyon. We have photos of this hike still posted from last year. This time we took our friends from the Resort, Bonnie and Bob. It was great to have them along and I think we set a record for time - they were truckers!

Winter 2008 - Grotto Hike : We have now attempted the Grotto Hike four times. Three times last year and this hike. We have finally located the Grotto but not the actual entrance to the Cave system. You'll see in these photos that we think we've found the caves but Ron quickly hit a dead end where some creature seemed to be living. He didn't hang around long enough to figure out what it was. We'll do this hike again and find the Caves. Everyone we've talked to says it's worth the effort. If we don't return from a hike someday, start searching here. (just kidding - we're way to cautious)

Christmas 2007 : The "Christmas 2007" gallery includes celebrations with friends and family. We celebrated Christmas with the boys on Christmas Eve and then drove to Michigan on Christmas Day. My sister Diane had the "Gordon" and "Zag" family for dinner. We were all together except for Laura and Chuck who were visiting family and friends in Colorado. We missed them! After spending a couple of days with Di and Dick we headed for Curtis for a few days of skiing and one spectacular bonefire that my sister, Mary and Ron created. Ladder Canyon Hike March 20, 2007 : This hike returns us to our favorite place; the Mecca Hills which are east and south of Palm Desert. The first few photos show how the colors and textures of the hills are constantly changing. The rest of the photos show our hike up a narrow slot canyon reachable only by climbing ladders. Once we reached the top of the canyon we climbed along the ridge and found some plants in bloom. Then we descended into an adjacent canyon and hiked back to our car for a total hike of 5 miles and 3.5 hours.

Hike to Iceberg Lake 6-20-07 : We started this hike on the afternoon of the warmest and least windy day. Our intent was to hike up about 2.5 miles to a falls, but when we got there everyone we met told us we had to continue another 2.5 miles to Iceberg lake. So we did. We got to the lake about 4:30. A Ram has just fallen through the ice and drowned an hour before we arrived. By the time we got there a wolverine was trying to pull him out. You can see both in the photos. The lake was beautiful and the drama exciting but we were past our turn around time so we hurried down and arrived at the trailhead about 7:30. Overall a wonderful 10 mile hike with NO BEARS!

A gentle hike in the woods June 18, 2007 : This hike wasn't really that gentle. It was about 3.5 miles long through dense brush. Unfortunately this is one of the first times that we didn't really capture the hike with photos. Half way through the hike we had a "bear encounter." No, that's not quite right - we had a double bear encounter. First one bear came walking toward us and didn't stop until we yelled. We quickly headed down the trail but stopped briefly to put on our rain gear. As we were putting on jackets and keeping an eye out behind us we spotted a second bear. Both bears slowly came toward us and followed us for some distance. Ron said he'd never seen me walk so fast in his life. I was also singing at the top of my lungs. We did stop and report our experience at the Ranger Station and met a Michigan Tech Student who was working in the park this summer. It's a small world.

grotto hike 2-22-07 : This hike in the Mecca Hills is named for the caves (Grottos) made from huge mud boulders that have fallen and closed off the narrow canyon. You can crawl up to the small opening that leads into these caves but the memorial plaque (see photo) and small crawl spaces convinced us going into them was not a good idea. We did have our head lamps and an extra flashlight along just in case. As we were coming back the wind picked up and we went through our first dust "white out". It reminded me of living in Texas where we learned to eat everything without biting down so you didn't destroy your teeth on the grit.
